Scientific Writing: Towards Organization and Motivation
Online

Ph.D. candidates and scientists often struggle with writing journal articles or their theses, while simultaneously completing time-consuming teaching and research projects. Academic and scientific writing is a skill that can be learned and mastered with discipline and commitment. In this workshop, we will develop a set of "how-to" strategies for writing journal articles and theses and increase your writing productivity.

Included topics:

  • Common challenges and misunderstandings in academic/scientific writing
  • How to organize the flow of information
  • The sections of a scientific article
  • The stages of the writing process
  • Different types of writers
  • Techniques and AI-based software/tools to increase writing productivity Is ‘technique’ (i.e. method) meant here or should it be ‘technology’
  • Clear academic/scientific writing
  • Teamwork with co-authors and supervisors
  • Procrastination and perfectionism in writing
  • Motivational tools to increase writing productivity

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Overcome common writer's blocks related to procrastination and perfectionism
  • Identify key structural components of a scientific article
  • Apply principles of clarity to a text
  • Write part of a journal article or thesis
  • Use strategies/tools to increase writing productivity
  • Understand the broader perspective of the writing process

This workshop follows a balanced approach, combining input presentations from the trainer, individual learning phases and group exercises. Hand-outs and sample articles from the trainer's own experience will be provided. The trainer will also discuss the role of AI-based tools/software in assisting writers.

During the workshop, participants will draft part of their current writing project (e.g. a journal article or a thesis, 1-2 pages). Therefore, participants are asked to select in advance which writing task they want to do during the workshop. This workshop will be offered in English. Following the workshop, participants can contact the HSRM Language Coaches (englishforstaff@hs-rm.de.) for further support.
